Adi Kailash, also called Chhota Kailash, is one of the holiest places in the Himalayas and is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati. Located in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, near the India–Nepal–Tibet border, the pilgrimage combines spiritual devotion, dramatic Himalayan landscapes, and deep cultural significance.

Along with Om Parvat (famous for the naturally formed ❛ॐ❜ symbol on the mountain), the Adi Kailash Yatra is considered one of the most sacred journeys for Shiva devotees and spiritual seekers.

🌄 Why Adi Kailash Is So Sacred

Adi Kailash is associated with:

  • Lord Shiva and Parvati’s divine residence
  • An ancient meditation site visited by sages
  • A spiritually charged environment said to cleanse inner energy
  • The intersection of Indian and Tibetan spiritual culture

Unlike Mount Kailash in Tibet, pilgrims can visit Adi Kailash without passport/visa and experience similar serenity within India.

🚗 How to Reach Adi Kailash

Step 1: Travel to Dharchula

Dharchula is the base point for permits and registration.

Step 2: Yatra Route (By Vehicle + Trek)

Dharchula → Gunji → Nabi → Nampa → Jolingkong → Adi Kailash Lake & Shiv Parvati Temple

This is not a high-difficulty trek like Kailash Mansarovar.
A majority of the route is now reachable by road (4×4 recommended) + a short walk to reach the lake and temple.

Because the region is close to the international border, government permissions are mandatory.

Permits are issued at Dharchula.
